Workers stand in front of the W. J. Penhallegon Boot and Shoe store, on High Street, in Mineral Point. This building was destroyed by a disastrous fire in 1897 From The Mineral Point Tribune, May 6, 1897: MINERAL POINT SCORCHED $40,000 Worth of Property Consumed Within a Few Hours Half a Business Block, from Vivan's Drug Store to Martin & Toay's Hardware Store Obliterated What was a substantial, well occupied row of business houses on High street last Monday evening, was a heap of smoldering ruins when the sun rose Tuesday morning. The stores of Martin & Toay, W. J. Penhallegon, Miss Wearne, milliner, Brewer & Penhallegon and John R. Toay are no more where they were when the Tribune of last week was issued. All of these are totally swept away, and the vacuum left on our main business street spreads gloom over the city.
